Towards a sustainable society through transdisciplinary knowledge
Dean KAMEI Atsushi
Welcome to the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering at Shimane University.
Shimane Prefecture is historically revered as a sacred land closely associated with the myriad deities of Japanese mythology. Situated in this culturally and naturally rich region, Shimane University is a national institution offering academic pursuits in a setting steeped in tradition and surrounded by nature. With a well-balanced array of faculties across the humanities and sciences, the university provides comprehensive support for international students and fosters global engagement. Through research and education addressing regional challenges, it actively contributes to the advancement of a sustainable society. As a bridge between local communities and the global stage, Shimane University presents a compelling destination for international learners.
The faculty encompasses seven specialized fields: Applied Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Information Systems Design and Data Science, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Architectural Design. For over 20 years, it has integrated perspectives from both science and engineering to promote interdisciplinary education and research under the name "Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering".
Building on this tradition, the faculty has launched a new unified department system to embody a concept called "Transdisciplinary Knowledge", aiming to foster new forms of learning and discovery. In the first year, students study a broad foundation in science and engineering. From the second year, they choose one of three focus areas: Advanced Manufacturing, Mathematical Data Science/ Information/ Digital Technology, or Natural and Living Environment.
However, learning is not confined to these areas. Students can design their own interdisciplinary "Only-One Curriculum" by using one of 14 standard model curricula as a guide, which are built from the school’s seven specialties. This flexible structure allows students to explore new interdisciplinary domains or dive deeply into a specific field.
The program encourages students to take ownership of their education, deepen their research, and cultivate the creativity and initiative needed to shape the future. We warmly welcome students eager to pursue their academic and research goals in this dynamic environment.
