Welcome to the Shimane University Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Shimane Prefecture is a beautiful place well-blessed with nature and rich traditional culture such as myths, kagura (sacred music and dancing performed at a shrine), tea ceremony, sake brewing, etc. In the area of science and technology as well, it is filled with momentum of innovation, having developed cutting-edge metallic engineering inheriting a traditional method of Tatara iron making and globally spreading Ruby programming language.

In such pleasant environments, the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering, consisting of seven departments, provides education and conducts research in a wide range of disciplines from fundamental science to advanced applied technology. In each department, our students learn through lectures, seminars and experiments and conduct graduation research under the mentorship of our faculty members with outstanding research experience.

In addition, we have a great variety of curriculums to cultivate practical expertise in and out of the classroom. For example, the Materials Science and Engineering Special Course invites a lecturer from the University of Oxford and a local company. The Systems Innovation Project is conducted in collaboration with an IT company in this region. The Special Course in Science and Engineering enables our students to conduct research from the first and the second year. And other more.

Our graduate programs are also pre-eminent. In science and engineering, it’s not an exaggeration to say that real learning is attained in graduate school where students learn the methodology by pursuing research while utilizing technical knowledge. To be exposed to the process and experience success and failure will be a good foothold in the future whatever your career target is.

While collaborating with the local community and the university abroad, we are committed to providing science and engineering education that is unique to Shimane University with the faculty members who have a great individuality. Then, we produce engineers and researchers who are able to lead the local industry, contribute to Japanese science and technology and consequently play an active role on the global stage.
