| œDepartment of Materials Creation and Circulation Technology |
| Today, materials are faced with contradicting challenges, or the
realization of advanced functions and solutions to disappearing resources
and energies, and deterioration of the environment by waste. Meeting
these demands definitely requires the availability of materials with
advanced functions and the creation of production and post-processing
technologies with less environmental loads.
Shimane is a traditionally "advanced" area; it has been
the leader in materials technology for the past two millennia with
specialties in each area, covering bronze ware, large wooden structures,
silver mining, foot bellows iron-making, special steel, ceramics
and electronic materials. The Soft Business Park Shimane opened
in 2001 has attracted many R & D oriented corporations in fields
such as metal materials and ceramics, traditional specialties in
the area, as well as information.
In cooperation with the Soft Business Park Shimane, the Department
promotes education and research in two fields: the development of
materials (which can contribute to the betterment of human lifestyles)
and the circulation of materials (for optimization of the process
flows of resources, materials, processing, products, disposal and
recycling). This thereby provides opportunities for independent
R & D activities and developing advanced expert professionals
who can bring immediate benefits to their employers by aligning
R & D with commercialization.

| œMaterials Creation Engineering Course |
Engineering in the 21st century is expected to create new industries
and foster a new technological civilization by providing breakthroughs
in innovative technology. Revitalization of local industry depends
on whether or not a new technology can be created in this deeply-rooted
area. Such technological innovation can only be achieved by materials
technology, the leader in such a challenging undertaking. The bottom
line of Materials Creation Engineering is to realize technological
innovation by developing new functional materials and creating new
materials through delicate chemical reaction control. This course,
consisting of three education/research fields, centers on plasma process
and graded structure energy conversion materials, nanotechnology-based
advanced ceramics and new super-conductive materials and advanced
functional catalysts, as well as the technology to create new functional
materials through materials conversion technology. Therefore, its
objective is to help students acquire a basis for device and system
innovation. The course also conducts research on an academic system
of creating and evaluating common materials that serve as guidelines
in such materials development. It is also committed to developing
human resources who will shoulder the next generation industry. |

| œResources and Materials Science
and Engineering |
| Sustainable growth of society
and appropriate treatment of resources and environment issues are
major challenges for mankind in the 21st century. To this end, it
is important to make a continuous exploration of quality resource
materials and develop an engineering evaluation system for the development
and application of those materials. The effective use of materials
to secure safe and comfortable lifestyles for mankind is an ultimate
goal of this century. This challenging mission requires the conversion
of limited resources to excellent materials with minimum environmental
loads, monitoring the effect of those materials and their development
on vulnerability to natural disasters and on the present ecosystem,
as well as looking at the life cycle of materials, from exploitation
to reuse and recycling and to final disposal. The course focuses on
the prospective, development and engineering evaluation of resource
materials, including the evaluation of resources characteristics,
and the processing, use and recycling of ceramics, wood and steel
materials derived from those resource materials. It aims to contribute
to the development of a sustainable cyclic society capable of maintaining
a good balance between the community and the entire social system
and the provision of advanced engineers engaged in such activities
to society. |
